A Holter monitor is a portable electrocardiogram (EKG) that monitors the electrical activity of an ambulatory (freely moving) patient's heart while the person goes about daily activities. These medical devices record the electrical activity of the heart and are often used to diagnose arrhythmias or myocardial ischemia, conditions that may or may not cause symptoms.
Sensors will be taped to your chest, and a portable recording device will be given to you. Be careful to not let the sensors fall off. Bathing and activities which might pull at the sensors or wires should be avoided, but keep to your regular schedule as much as possible. You should keep a diary of your daily activities and physical symptoms, including any medications you take for the entire time the Holter monitor is attached. This could last between 1 and 5 days.
The sensors will be removed and the results from the Holter monitor will be evaluated. Your doctor will then decide on further tests, medications, or recommendations after that.
